There are new startup companies that pop up every day, and there are always new ideas being shared across the internet. However there will always be the top sites as well. The creme of the crop of social networking, web 2.0, or whatever you want to call it. These are the websites that everybody loves to visit and uses on a daily basis, and these are also the companies that are looking for the most help. Most people to visit YouTube do not think about getting a job there, though I would bet it would be an awesome work environment. So with a little digging around, I have found 11 of the coolest companies to land a job as a web developer. Note that I have never actually worked at any of them, so I can’t say first-hand how it would be, but why not give them a little consideration if you’re interested?
Mozilla
The creators of everybody’s favorite internet browser, Mozilla is a company with great potential for the future (with their already heightened potential now). As more and more people switch to using Firefox as their default browser, Mozilla requires not only more software engineers to design the latest and greatest technology for their software, but also need developers and designers to keep their website up-to-date and working well. If you’d like to check out their website you can do so here, or you can check out their current jobs.
As mobile technology becomes more abundant, more and more people are starting to use SMS in various ways. One of the most popular companies utilizing this today would be Twitter. It is a social networking site that simply asks “what are you doing?”. It allows you to keep in touch with all your friends and see what they are doing. A very simple idea that is working out well for the site’s team. As their site expands and grows for a larger audience, there is an increase in need of employees to help develop the site’s scalability and new features. Definitely a great place to check. Jobs Page.
The company that blew MySpace out of the water, Facebook is an ever-expanding company with a very bright future. The site’s founder Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook while he was still a student at Harvard, and the site has exploded over the past couple of years. There have been some recent updates done to the site as well, and they have quite the extensive list of jobs available for the right candidates. For what seems like a fun working environment, I would imagine Facebook to be a great place for any web developer to thrive and gain essential work experience. Check out Facebook’s Jobs.

From videos put out from the company and the people who work there, Digg seems like one of the most fun and laid-back places to work, while also getting a lot accomplished. Digg was started only a few years ago by founder Kevin Rose, in only a short time it has grown into an internet hit. Allowing people to digg stories they think are cool and bury stories that are lame is a groundbreaking idea, and the team is still coming up with amazing ideas for the future. Though it is a neat twist, Metacafe still hasn’t broken through as much as Youtube has, but they are really climbing up there. Although LinkedIn is mostly for people looking for jobs, they are also hiring for people to work for their company! You can check out their jobs here.
Everybody’s favorite search engine is in need of help, and in many different states as well! I think it goes without saying that almost everybody in the US, or even in the world has at least heard of Google, Inc. For being such a large company and having such control of many aspects of the internet, it’s surprising to find out that there is such a laid-back working environment at Google’s workplaces.
